Blood Moon Farm....We Grow Fear

The Legend of Blood Moon Farm
In the early 1800’s, there weren’t facilities for the insane like the institutions we have today. In the larger cities, they were committed to private areas of prisons, where they wasted away until they died.

In the more rural areas, such as the Mahoning Valley was at the time, the criminally insane were committed to prison farms where buildings were built to house them. These patients were ignored and kept locked up until they eventually wasted away and died.

10462651_772074332815436_6946158417909149591_nThe current Canfield Fairgrounds was such a farm in the early days. Inmates were subject to neglect and horrible treatment. One day, they revolted and freed themselves. They attempted to escape under the guise of darkness, but a true blood moon could be seen glowing brightly in the sky. The “blood-filled moon” only fueled the escaped lunatics. It became known as the “Night of Blood” as these insane inmates embarked on a night of slaughter, killing everyone at the prison including other inmates and even the animals on the farm. The carnage only ended when state police were called in and shot and killed 8 inmates of the farm.

The insane farm, all 350 acres of it, was closed and the grounds remained empty until the Canfield Fair was established in 1846. Although the gates were boarded up and the crime scene was erased (for the most part), stories abounded telling of the strange happenings that continued to occur on the farm. It is even rumored that a human scarecrow was found trussed up in a remote part of the property years later. Even the most normal, innocent folk are drawn to the fairgrounds every fall to this day.

Although 200 years have passed, and the evidence has long since washed away, Blood Moon Farm will return this harvest season for good. The locals have forever nicknamed the site of the “Night of Blood” the Canfield Scaregrounds, and for good reason. Email Haunt Owner

  • Email Verified Amazing!

I went last year and I am about to travel all the way from RVA to go once again, with more family in tow! It is amazing and even if it does have a corny or different way to do something, the make up and costumes are amazing and I got to go through on my own last year, and it was bloody fantastic, and I cannot wait too visit again in a few short hours! Thank you BMF for the greatest time ever!

  • Blood Moon Farm stepped up its game!

This attraction now has 8 haunted houses & a hayride. They have really increased their scare factor & it's worth a visit. Pet house is amusing, Doll house has some cool stuff, Slaughter & Clown houses are great, Main house is so worth it, and Hayride much better this year. Hayride has a cool zombie drive in scene. Scaregrounds is worth it this year! I'm headed back this weekend.

  • Don't waste your money

This place is such a disappointment. First of all, the whole atmosphere lacks the feel of a "haunted" attraction. They don't even have haunted music playing over the speaker system...just random heavy metal, sometimes it was silent. Not scary. The hayride is not scary with a bunch of corny scenes. The main house...boring and predictable with a bunch of soap suds at the exit. How is that "scary"??? What is with the tent filled with fog? You can't even see the scary stuff hanging around. Just fog. It should be called a fog tent. Another thing, there was some guy driving his old green pick up truck right through the main walkway with a bunch of fog and young kids running from actors with chainsaws. That is an accident waiting to happen!!! Spend your money elsewhere. I live right in Canfield and I will be happy to drive a longer distance to spend my money on a better attraction.

  • All New Blood Moon Farm

I stopped by the Canfield Scaregrounds booth at the Canfield Fair this year and they scared tons of people in broad daylight, so I have high hopes for this year. Their new image (Blood Moon Farm) has an awesome backstory on their website and I can't wait to come through. Everything looks all new this year, with no more catering to younger audiences. Definitely a promising sign for the, coming scare season.

  • I love it

My sister works as an actress and as a make up artist there. She took me one day and she let me work with her on the hayride! Everyone there was so nice and I didn't really get to see the haunted house but when ever I go there I will have fun and be scared

  • I don't usually write negative reviews very often. But this place was horrible. I am from Pittsburgh pa and travel the tri state area (pa, oh, wv) for haunted houses. This was by far the worst one I went to this season. The hayride was super corny, the Mist wasn't even open and the in the actual haunted house I stepped out of one of the doors for the actors and almost broke my leg it was like a 2 foot drop. There was a so called"actress" texting on her phone in the one room. The acting here reminded me of a church youth group haunted house, which is actually an insult to youth groups. I will never waste my money at this place again.

  • Canfield " Non-Scaregrounds"

I took my 8yr. old daughter there on Oct.27th. It was laughable. Neither her nor I were afraid at all. It was more funny then anything. When you cant even come close to scaring an 8yr. old thats pretty bad. We've been to several in the area this year and Canfield is by far the worst. The best part of the whole experience was the "Headless Horseman" chasing people out into the parking lot. (While on his horse!) Funny! But for liability issues I have to question that stunt. Also, the hot chocolate was very good at the elephant ear stand across from the terrible "Maze in the Mist." Another boring attraction.
